About this work

John III of Portugal (1502-1557), son and successor of Manuel the Great, who was married to Eleanor of Austria. Married to Catherine, the youngest sister of Emperor Charles V. Depicted as a rider in a black mantle with light fur, dark red skirt, sleeves and leg coverings, on a rearing horse. The horse has yellow and red tack and dark grey saddle cloth. Top right the coat of arms of Portugal.
