About this work
A group of people has gathered in front of a monument for the school inspector Theodorus van Swinderen. A young man is in the process of completing the monument with an inscription. This is being dictated to him by a teacher standing next to the pedestal. A woman with two children at her skirts points to the portrait in the medallion, held by a putto blowing a trumpet. Behind them lie objects referring to science, such as a globe and books. Further along the path, a group of men stands, one of whom points to a dome in the distance; the Temple of Immortality. Below the image, a four-line caption.
