About this work
Interior of a wretched peasant household. An old man and a young woman sit at a table. Both have their eyes closed and hands folded in prayer. On the table stands a large bowl of soup or porridge, a lump of bread and some butter. The room is untidy. On the floor lie a broken bench and a broken fire pot. On the windowsill a jug and a print of a monkey.
