About this work
Joseph is sold by his brothers to a group of Ishmaelites. In the foreground the pit, in which his brothers had held him captive. In the background a goat is slaughtered to smear Joseph's coat with blood, so that his father will believe that Joseph has been torn apart by wild animals. In the margin at the bottom a reference to the Bible text and the title in Hebrew, English, German, Latin, French and Dutch.
