About this work

In the gate of Bethlehem a relative of Boaz renounces his right as redeemer before the ten elders by taking off his shoe. In this way he transfers the rights to Boaz. The shoe was the symbol of dominion and authority. Whoever bought a piece of land did so by placing his foot, his shod foot, on it. Illustration of the Bible text Ruth IV: 1-13. Below the scene the title in Hebrew, English, German, Latin, French and Dutch.
