About this work
The painter, printmaker and draughtsman Michiel van Musscher holding a palette, painting stick and brushes. Behind him stands an easel. His portrait is surrounded by allegorical symbols - Father Time, an hourglass and soap bubbles. The painter's attributes and the symbols refer to the transience of time and the immortality of the artist through his fame. The verse on the tablet states that Father Time lifts the veil to reveal the greatness of the painter, but also refers to the hourglass indicating that his life is already partially over.
