About this work
A memorial stone dedicated to Jan Carel Josephus van Speyk, the Dutch gunboat commander, who in 1831 during the Belgian uprising blew himself up in Antwerp, together with his boat and his crew. The memorial plaque is by father and son Sigault, commissioned by architect Jan de Greef, placed in the Civic Orphanage in Amsterdam.
