About this work

Perrenot de Granvelle (1517-1586) was a statesman in the service of the Habsburgs and became bishop of Arras at the age of 21. In later years he became one of the most influential advisors of the Governor-General Margaret of Parma. Granvelle had a great interest in arts and sciences. The book in his hand refers to this interest. Granvelle may have expressed his wish to be portrayed as a scholar rather than as a statesman and ecclesiastical prelate.
