About this work

Portrait of Josephus Scaliger (1540-1609), philologist in Leiden, at the age of 35. Bust in an oval within an architectural ornamental frame with allegorical figures referring to language and science. Coat of arms above the portrait. Latin texts around the oval and in the cartouche below the portrait. Below the print (on a separate piece of paper, but glued on) a printed text consisting of 24 lines of Latin by Janus Dousa Filius.
