About this work
Semele begs Jupiter to love her; he reluctantly consents, for the glow of his lightning will kill her. Jupiter, surrounded by dazzling light, hovers with his lightning bolt in hand before Semele's bed; Cupid sits at the foot of the bed weeping; in the margin an inscription in French.
