About this work
Portrait of the scholar Desiderius Erasmus seated half-length at a table while writing. The artist derived this subject from a painting by Hans Holbein, but it is not an exact copy. The sheet on which the scholar writes is still blank, and the background is decorated with a tapestry, in contrast to Holbein's plain field.
