Frame for portrait of Armand Guéraud

Border with an allegorical representation of the invention and application of printing. Books with titles on the spines and printing tools are stacked around an empty frame. Under the frame, intended for the portrait of the printer Armand Guéraud, lies a law book with a sword. In a band at the bottom are Chinese characters and hieroglyphs. Meryon took great care in the execution of the border; he produced fourteen states and constantly changed the titles on the books as well as other details. Notable are some red accents with which the artist experimented.
