About this work
The chansonnier Aristide Bruant was born on 6 May 1851 in Courtenay and left for Paris at a young age. He performed in the cabaret 'Le Chat Noir' of Rodolphe Salis. In 1885 he took over the establishment and renamed it 'Le Mirliton' (a discordant musical instrument). Here he performed his heartbreaking songs, to which all of Paris went to listen. Bruant always performed in the costume in which he was immortalized by Toulouse-Lautrec: a large hat, velvet waistcoat, a red scarf and boots.
