About this work

Ceres as goddess of agriculture with a crown of ears of corn and a sickle. The burning torch and two-headed snake refer to her role as mother searching for her abducted daughter Proserpina. The inscription AEMA CERES DOCVIT SEGETVM SPEM CREDERE SVICIS states that faith in Ceres taught man to trust the hope of a good harvest to the plough.
