About this work
Due to the composition with the centrally placed olive tree, this print can be compared to Escher's San Gimignano (1922). In both prints, the planes are defined by the direction of the hatching. This creates a swirling motion that draws the eye inward, making the tree appear monumental. Although there is a resemblance in appearance, the sources differ. For Schelfhout this was Cubism, while for Escher it was the New Art (Dutch Art Nouveau).
