About this work
Illustration for the Gothic novel Vathek (1786) by William Beckford. The caliph Vathek wants to know what text is written in glowing letters on his swords. He offers a reward and punishes everyone who fails to give him the answer. On the left guards of Vathek holding a bearded man, in the middle on a table the swords, on the right Vathek himself pointing with an outstretched arm at the bearded man.
