About this work

A geisha reads a letter by candlelight, while leaning against the chest where her shamisen (string instrument) is stored. Through the paper (shoji) windows a willow is visible in the garden. The poem on the wall compares the strings of the shamisen with the 'threads' of the willow. Two texts by two different authors written in the letters.
