Musical Picnic in Ueno

The earliest Japanese prints were created from a single wooden block, resulting in images composed of black lines and planes. Moronobu was one of the first artists to produce prints using the woodcut technique. He often depicted events in and around the city, such as this musical picnic beneath cherry blossoms. The screen in the foreground with the family crests, affords privacy for the high-ranking lady in the middle.
