About this work

A bust portrait of the actor Ichikawa Danjûrô VII (1791-1859) in the role of samurai Iga no Jutarô with raised sword. Scene from the play Yama mata yama hana no yamagatsu, performed in 1823 in the Ichimura theater in Edo. With three poems, including one by the actor himself: 'It fills me with great joy when I look at the sky and see a kite with the Mimasu crest.' The Mimasu crest is the family emblem of the Ichikawa family.
