About this work

The scene is based on the biblical text Matthew 9:32-34 and Luke 11:14-16. In the Statenvertaling of Matthew it is described as follows: “As these went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and possessed by a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the mute spoke.” In the Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling 21: “While they were leaving the house, someone was brought to Him who was possessed and could not speak. After the demon was cast out, the mute began to speak.”
