About this work

Rembrandt’s admiration for the art of Hercules Segers is well known. Here, this is evident in a very unusual way. For this Flight into Egypt, Rembrandt used a copper plate by Segers with Tobias and the Angel. He effaced the original figures in the plate, replacing them with the Holy Family. He left the landscape largely untouched.
