About this work

Even though he was not exceptionally wealthy, the Amsterdam apothecary Francen was an ardent collector of art, including prints. Rembrandt and Francen must have been good friends: Francen supported him repeatedly when he suffered financial difficulties. Rembrandt here portrays Francen in his art room. The warm glow of the interior is due to the Japanese paper on which this impression is printed.
