About this work

The virtuous woman gives a purse to a merchant. She has bought the field in the background. The print is based on Proverbs 31:16: 'If she sets her mind on a field, she buys it'. The image bears a German inscription and is part of a six-part print series praising the activities of the virtuous housewife.
