About this work
Sophonisba, a noble lady from Carthage, sits naked on the bed. In her hands the poison cup with which she will commit suicide. She decides to take her own life because she does not want to be captured by the Romans. The print has a Latin inscription and forms part of a series about famous suicides from Antiquity.
