About this work
The personified Holland Society of Sciences is seated on a throne, on which the city arms of Haarlem and Amsterdam are attached. Beside the throne stands Ceres, goddess of agriculture, with a sheaf of corn and a sickle. On the right the seated Mercury with the caduceus in his hand. In the foreground two putti bend over a building plan. In the background ships on the water. Allegory on the first meeting of the 'Economic Section' of the Holland Society of Sciences founded in 1777 in Haarlem. This section of the Society had the aim of raising trade and business from their decline by means of annual prizes.
