About this work

Title page of Book 2 of De Ystroom (1671) by Antonides van der Goes. Allegorical representation with the river god of the IJ (the Ystroom god) on a throne. He is crowned by the goddess of navigation. She is flanked by Peace and War. Behind the company stands a wall with a view of Amsterdam. Above that Mercury and the personification of the enlightened society holding a globe with the new world. In the foreground a number of other personifications, among others of various peoples.
