About this work

River landscape with a city in the background. To the right in the foreground, a road along the bank. A traveler rests beside the road. His donkey, richly laden with various delicacies, stands next to him and is chewing on a thistle. This is the depiction of an emblem where the moral of the story teaches that the rich, despite their wealth, always find a reason to complain. The print has a Latin inscription with the caption of the emblem In Avaros by Andrea Alciati.
