About this work

The English etcher Francis Dodd mainly produced portraits. In his style he was somewhat influenced by his friend and teacher Muirhead Bone, who is portrayed here standing at the etching press. Because Bone looks at the viewer, the artist portrait simultaneously has the character of a friend portrait. Both friends became family of each other in 1903 when Bone married the sister of Francis Dodd.
