About this work
Made for the European elite, these illustrations were meant to portray the 'exotic' Far East. They contributed to the Eurocentric image of China. Additionally, they played a role in the subsequent craze for Chinoiserie: decorations featuring all kinds of, often inaccurate, 'Chinese' elements. This accurate illustration of an enlightened Buddha was later also adapted in Delftware.
