About this work

Sheet with 48 depictions of the life of the Westphalian servant girl Geesje. Poor Geesje departs by ship; in Amsterdam she does housework, plays with the child, scrubs and polishes, kneads dough, and bakes bread for a family. Geesje is then beaten by her mistress and runs away without permission. She is arrested and must go to the women's prison. When she is released from prison, she meets Jan, whom she marries. Jan gives his wife a severe beating and sends her back onto the street. Below each depiction is a caption.
