About this work
A woman rests, sitting on a bundle of wood, under a plum tree, near a stream. She smokes a pipe and looks at a deer passing by. Next to her lie more bundles of wood, which, combined with her clothing, suggests she comes from Ohara. Women from Ohara, near Kyoto, earned their living by gathering kindling. The deer makes her a representation of the god of happiness, Jurôjin. With three poems.
