About this work
The actor Ichikawa Danjûrô VII (1791-1859) holding a paper scroll, dressed in a blue checkered kimono with a black short kimono over it. With one anonymous poem. The 'Seven Komachi' in the title refers to seven events from the life of the famous female poet Ono no Komachi. This print refers to the moment, late in her life, when she refuses to answer a poem from the emperor because she has stopped writing poetry. Since not answering would be extremely rude, she decides to return the poem with only one syllable changed.
