About this work

Several British artists reproduced painted portraits in mezzotints. This technique had flourished in England in the second half of the 18th century as the premier reproduction medium. It offered the possibility of finely graded transitions, especially in the representation of shiny and soft velvet fabrics. On this portrait of Lady Erskine, dressed in a lace cape over a dark gown, the inscription has not yet been applied.
