Tableau vivant with the four seasons during a celebration at Versailles

In a pavilion in the garden of Versailles, a tableau is performed for Louis XIV and his retinue in which the Four Seasons - symbolized by animals from the king's menagerie - appear. In the middle sit Pan and Diana on a structure in the shape of a rock with trees. Pan is played by Molière, Diana by Mlle de Béjart. On either side of the rock the animals representing the seasons: to the right a horse (spring) and an elephant (summer); to the left a camel (autumn) and a bear (winter). Beside the animals servants with large trays on their heads. For this scene three groups of musicians. In the foreground sits the royal company, seen from the back. Under the performance a drapery with the title on it.
