About this work
Ceres, goddess of agriculture, drives a chariot drawn by dragons, veiled and holding a torch. She is searching for her daughter Proserpina, who has been abducted by Pluto. In the foreground, women sit by a stream where monstrous creatures swim. Scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses (Met. 5:438-445).
