About this work
Frederik de Vries (d. 1613) was entrusted by his father, the painter Dirck de Vries, to the care of Goltzius. Goltzius made a portrait of the boy together with a dog and sent it to Frederik's father, who was residing in Venice. The hunting dog, often drawn by Goltzius, was his own pet.
