About this work
Satirical print on seventeenth-century depictions of the five senses. As personification of the five senses a pipe-smoking man (taste) with glasses (sight) sitting on a chair. With a knife he cuts himself in the buttock (touch). At the same time he lets out a fart (smell and hearing), with which a burning candle on the ground is extinguished. Next to him a table with a jug, a cup and a plate. On a sheet of paper on the left on the wall an explanatory poem in Dutch and a translation in French in the middle below.
