About this work
Matisse continued to be Bruna's greatest source of inspiration from the 1950s. According to Bruna, 'the most difficult thing is keeping it simple.' Matisse rendered this woman's bold expression with a minimum of means. The varying thickness of the lines lends the flat plane three-dimensionality. This sheet is the first page of a book with countless alluring faces.
