Album with depictions of the story of Jason and the Argonauts

Album with title print and 24 etchings on 25 album sheets. The album contains four sheets with French text in book type with references (T.I to T.XXIV) to the series of images of the story of Jason and the Argonauts. The illustrations were designed and drawn by Asmus Jacob Carstens. After Carstens' death, Joseph Anton Koch bought the drawings, etched them (possibly wrote the text with the help of Carl Ludwig Fernow) and published them as a series. The French title reads 'Les Argonautes selon Pindare, Orphée et Apollonius de Rhodes'. There were probably three editions, one with the dating according to the French Republican calendar (VII), the publication with the dating 1799 in Roman numerals on the title page, and a third version published by Tomasso Piroli between 1807 and 1810. The sharp elementary line drawings as originally designed by Carstens are in some etchings supplemented with typical landscapes by Joseph Anton Koch.
