About this work

Portrait of Johann Daniel von Menzel (1698–1744) in costume and fur mantle. In his right hand a club. To his left, Death (a skeleton in French uniform, with left hand on the barrel of a musket and with right hand on the same club as the sitter. The representation is related to the theme of the Dance of Death where the living dance with Death. Below the image a German text and below that two lines of French text.
