About this work

While the Christ Child slumbers, an angel attentively holds Mary's distaff. Her carefully spun thread is easy to follow. According to the Apocrypha, Mary mended priestly vestments already at a young age. Bellange favoured religious themes, and often took an unusual approach. Mary's elongated body is characteristic of his elegant yet eccentric style.
