About this work
In the background, Apollo teaches his beloved Hyacinthus to throw the discus. However, the jealous west wind Zephyrus causes the discus to strike Hyacinthus' head. In the foreground, Apollo tends to his wound. Hyacinthus does not survive the incident, and from his blood a hyacinth would bloom.
