About this work

Wooded landscape with a city built against the hills in the distance. In the foreground a marshy area where Christ, watched by onlookers, drives a demon out of a man who could not speak on the right, thereby healing him. On the other side of the marsh, a farmer and farmer with child observe the miracle from a distance. Below the image the title in Latin and a reference to the biblical text in Luke 11:14-16 and Matthew 9:32-34. In the Statenvertaling of Matthew it is described as follows: "And when they were gone, behold, they brought to him a man, dumb, possessed with a devil. And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake." In the Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling 21: "As they were leaving the house, someone was brought to him who was possessed and could not speak. After the demon was cast out, the mute began to speak."
