About this work

Illustration for the story 'Le Connoisseur' from J.F. Marmontel's collection 'Contes moraux'. The young poet Celicour travels to Paris to make his fortune. In the city, he is taken under the wing of an old 'connoisseur' and expert. Celicour falls in love with his niece Agathe. In a library, Celicour and Agathe meet. Her uncle sits at a table.
