About this work

Tamamo no Mae, the very intelligent and beautiful concubine of Emperor Toba. In the background, two bowing court ladies with swords. Tamamo no Mae was in reality a magical fox, known in Japanese legends as a shape-shifter. Scene from a kabuki play. Poem by Funya no Asayasu.
