About this work

An emblem with two scenes. Above stands the female personification of Hope on a rock in the sea, with an anchor beside her. Below, a woman wrestles with a merman, pulling him by his hair. These are the devices of Catharina and Elisabeth of Austria, wives of Sigismund II August of Poland.
