About this work

Neptune gives his trident, which symbolizes dominion over the world seas, to the personification of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. She holds a spear with a liberty cap in her hand and is surrounded by the personifications of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and the Dutch West India Company (WIC). To the right, Mercury points with his caduceus to a world map being unrolled by a putto. In the lower margin, a four-line French text.
