About this work

Kabuki actor Kawarasaki Gonjurô in the role of the thief Tateba no Taheji. The smoke in the background comes from the fires that bearers made at resting places (tateba) to drive away mosquitoes and thus refers to the name of the thief played: Tateba no Taheji. Scene from the play Shôbu awase adauchi kôdan, Gappo ga tsuji mono, first performed at the Ichimura theater in May 1810.
