About this work
On the table surface at the right front stands a glass with liquid and a spoon in it (absinthe?) and a candlestick with a just-extinguished candle. The smoke trails from the candle are ornamentally worked into an irregular pattern of squiggly lines across almost the entire picture plane. Between these lines some motifs can be recognized: a somewhat larger and a very small skull, a portrait, a setting sun, a bare foot and rooster's feet.
