About this work
Allegory with personifications of Painting (Pittura) and Merit (Merito) amidst ancient ruins, portrait busts, and urns. Merito points to an ancient bust for Pittura. In front of them lie ancient architectural fragments, an incense burner, a skull, and bones. The etching is mounted on an album page provided (presumably by the artist himself) with a handwritten table of contents for a print album with works by and after Flemish and Dutch painters, including Nicolaas Maas, Willem de Heus, Pieter van Slingeland, Pieter Bout, and others.
